Steel seat tube legs needed

Post by Dwight Lewis »

ImageThere was a post on the forum with someone making legs for the seats. I recently bout a seat with backrest( overpriced) and realized once I leaned to one side that legs on that side felt unstable. Upon inspection I see the V bracket for that leg has wallowed out a Lil, causing the bracket to come out of you are not careful. Too send the seat back to the manufacturer to have them put in new legs, would cost the price of a new seat. Where can I find these legs?

Wow that's some serious wear. I'm sure you considered contacting Steelers Choice about legs? Shipping is so ridiculous that sending the seat itself is not an option. Years ago I made a set of legs out of electrical EMT conduit. To bend the corners I heated the pipe and slowly bent in a vice. It wasn't pretty but I wanted that tighter bend. The typical EMT bender makes to large of an arc so a real pipe bending mandrel is necessary. I didn't search the hot rod shops for someone to make the legs but I bet there is a custom shop locally that could do the work.

An idea… Get the measurements of the rods and head to your local hardware store and look for some bronze or nylon bushings. You may have to drill out the ID of the bushing to fit the rod. Then drill out the hole in the leg slightly smaller then the bushing OD and press it into the leg. If you can’t get the bushing tight in the leg use some JB Weld epoxy to hold in place.

I've already paid more than I should have for this seat, just to realize the legs are worn.

From the pictures it is hard to see, How much movement would be in the brace pivot joint.
Check the bolt and bracket that tightens down the angle support rods, To bottom of seat. If the metal bracket that the bolts tightens down is bent, Will not hold brace and allow legs to move.
Good luck finding the problem and cure, Happy Steelin.

The legs are worn understandably from the u bracket that tightens down the V braces to the Vbrace connections to the legs. For the braces to maneuver itself from inside the legs is a bad waiting for a place to happen.
